Unique antique German hand carved figural Black Forest wooden tobacco box. This is an endearing and lovely hand carved work, dating towards 1900. The large "oak" barrel would have been used for storing loose tobacco. The barrel is hand carved with all the details of a full size barrel. A bear (monkey) sits next to the barrel with his smokers hat and tassel, thinking about life. He is finely detailed, his fur, expression and stance are carefully depicted. The bear sitting on his rock to attached to the base with a screw and the barrel, which is a little loose, is attached by two wooden pegs. It is a quality piece of work, with careful attention given to the entire carving.
It measures approx 9 1/2" in diameter and 7" tall at the tallest point. It is in very good antique condition.
It is a handsome and useful Black Forest carving that would be a charming storage box for a desktop or side table.
