Beautiful Antique EAPG sun purple flint glass cigar jar with glass lid, marked 1st District Illinois Factory No 3 and signed with an lowercase e in the middle. The clear to purple glass jar lid also has a humidor, a small open compartment created as a result of the knob being hollow, not solid, when it was blown. From underneath, a small piece of gauze or sponge was inserted into the hollow and then water was poured into it and it was soaked up. This kept the cigars fresh and moist, not dried up.
Measures approx. 6 3/4" tall (from bottom of jar to top of lid handle) and 5 1/2" wide. ANTIQUE nice sun-colored-amethyst colored, blown into mold, glass cigar jar w/ original lid.
The base of the jar is embossed in the glass "FACTORY No 3 - 1st DISTRICT, ILL."
This jar is in very good condition. Overall good condition. The purple amethyst tint color is the result of it being exposed to limited sun light. The clear glass in this cigar jar when exposed to direct sun light turns the glass to a rich purple color due to the fact that the glass was made without lead, containing manganese instead. The manganese in the glass has been found to turn a very light lavender if placed in a sunny window or otherwise exposed over time to ultraviolet rays of the sun. This piece has been exposed to the sun, naturally over the past hundred years and has reacted with the magnesium. The practice of using manganese in glass was stopped in 1914. Not only does this purple/amethyst color make it a great looking, but it also authenticates it as being truly antique!
There are not a lot of these old cigars in circulation today that still have the original lids!
