Wilton Armetale is not pewter but looks similar to pewter. It is often thought of as Wilton pewter. You might see some little dings or dents made into the Armetale to resemble the pieces used in the 1700s.
The Wilton Armetale Plough Pattern was originally designed after a piece made by Benjamin and Joseph Harbeson (1793-1808). The Plough Pattern Armetale came out in the mid 1960's. It is simple and adapts to home anywhere.
This pattern was photographed extensively in national publications and was made famous by a photo of it on the table of the American White House Chief of Staff meetings. These photos were widely published during the Carter, Reagan and Bush Presidencies.
The Plough Pattern namesake is the historic Plough Tavern in York, PA . The building was constructed in 1741, and is known as the Golden Plough Tavern (also known as the General Horatio Gates House). Architecturally, the tavern is in the Germanic Half-Timber style, reminiscent of 18th century Black Forest construction. The Tavern is on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.
