Extremely rare board game 3M Jati Bookshelf game by Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company (MM & M Co.). I believe this was an error run of the game as the front has a copyright date of 1965 (First Edition), but the back and inside are dated 1966. This game was a protype distributed to 3M executives for evaluation. If you like abstract strategy games or trading games, this one is for you! For vintage toy board game collectors this is the ultimate addition to your collection. With less than 100 copies made of the 1965 original run of Jati games, and most of them either destroyed or unaccounted for, this is a must have for collectors. Of all Jati games ever produced, there are less than 20 verified existing worldwide. Search Ebay, you won't find Jati!
As I stated earlier I believe this was an error printing with the two different copyright dates 1965 and 1966 and the 9*10 playing surface (which is the 1966 layout). This is the rarest of the 3M bookshelf games - complete your collection today!
The game includes:
Two plastic boards
8 Black Plastic Pieces (Booster Tiles)
18 Yellow Plastic Pieces (Playing Tiles)
18 Red Plastic Pieces (Playing Tiles)
18 Blue Plastic Pieces (Playing Tiles)
18 Brown Plastic Pieces (Playing Tiles)
Instructions on the inside of the box.
Condition: Good played with condition with minor damage to the box and one tile, please review the pictures carefully.
Below, some Internet research on Jati and its collectability. Feel free to research yourself to verify its rarity
boardgamegeek.com- "A candidate for publication in the 3M Bookshelf Series, but never published in quantity. It is a very simple tile placement game. It is a 2 or 4 player game, the four player rules consisting simply in a tournament.
Only about 100 1965 copies of this game were produced; they were all pre-production, not for sale play test and reviewers' copies and most were subsequently destroyed. The first run had a 1965 copyright and a 10 X 10 playing surface; the second run has a 1966 copyright and a 9 x 10 playing surface."
gamersalliance.com- "One of the "Holy Grails" for fans of the classic 3M series of games
According to an article published in the Minneapolis Tribune on December 5, 1965, Jati was designed by artist ("basically a painter") Keith Havens from Mound, Minnesota. In its original incarnation, Jati was played on a piece of stiffened burlap, rolled scroll-style and packaged in a round tube. However, realizing that such a presentation would not fit in with the line of 3M games, Havens reworked the game with plastic boards and bookshelf box packaging. While the article states that the game "is being marketed by 3M", that bit of information was premature and, as it turns out, inaccurate. Jati was originally slated to become another bookshelf boxed abstract strategy game in the 3M line but before committing to a full scale production, the executives at 3M wanted some feedback.
